Art of Fracture and Restoration

Kristin Kelly Javier is a Hudson Valley-based artist whose mosaics are crafted entirely from hand-cut and discovered materials. Each six-sided tessera—cut with a carbide-tipped hammer and a pitched anvil—is a miniature sculpture, embedded directly into oxide-tinted cement. Her work navigates both interior and exterior landscapes, mapping the memories and sensations held within them.
Born in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky to Italian and Irish roots, Kristin began as a self-taught artist. Her formal training includes Classical and Modern Mosaic studies in Italy, as well as continued work with the Chicago Mosaic School. She currently divides her time between Upstate New York and Northern New Mexico.
In recent years, Kristin has developed a deep connection to red clay, drawn to its primal origin and generative energy. She is captivated by both mosaic and sculpture for their timeless lineage, contemplative rhythm, and boundless potential. Her sculptural practice has been enriched through studies with Debra Fritts in Abiquiu, New Mexico, and Dana Parlier in Ardsley, New York.
